Tehran, June 21, 2025 — After more than 62 hours of digital blackout, Iran is set to reconnect to the global internet on Saturday night, according to Iranian state media citing the country's Ministry of Communications.
The prolonged outage began on Wednesday, amid growing concerns of a potential Israeli cyberattack during the height of Iran-Israel military tensions. In response, the Iranian government restricted bandwidth and severed connections to the World Wide Web, aiming to prevent possible infiltration and disinformation.
🌐 Internet Access Returns, But Not Fully Restored
According to NetBlocks, a global internet observatory, partial internet restoration has already begun in several regions. However, full connectivity is still inconsistent.
“While connectivity has improved in certain provinces, many regions remain offline or experience unstable access,” said NetBlocks in a status update.
The shutdown left millions of Iranians digitally isolated, unable to access vital services or communicate with loved ones both domestically and abroad. Many described the blackout as the most severe internet disruption since the 2019 protests, calling it a massive blow to public communication and transparency.
🔒 Strategic Blackout Amid War
The Iranian government framed the blackout as a "national security measure", implemented to protect critical infrastructure from cyber threats during a time of armed conflict with Israel.
“With the increasing threat of cyberwarfare, we had to act swiftly to secure our digital borders,” said an unnamed Iranian official.
Digital rights activists, however, have raised concerns over freedom of information, stating that cutting off entire populations from the internet should be a last resort — not a default wartime tactic.
As the conflict enters a new phase, experts suggest that Iran may continue to enforce selective blackouts or throttling in high-risk zones.
