Iran Appoints Brigadier General Majid Khadami as New IRGC Intelligence Chief Amid Rising Tensions
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has appointed Brigadier General Majid Khadami as its new intelligence chief, as announced on Thursday, June 19. The decision was finalized by Major General Mohammad Pakpour, one of IRGC’s top commanders, according to Iran’s state news agency IRNA.
Khadami replaces Brigadier General Mohammad Kazemi, who was killed on June 15 during an Israeli airstrike. His appointment comes at a critical moment as Iran and Israel remain locked in an intense cycle of attacks.
Major General Pakpour himself recently assumed his top command position in the IRGC, just days after the assassination of former IRGC chief Major General Hossein Salami. Salami was also killed in the first wave of Israeli air raids, which targeted Iran’s key military and intelligence figures. Following his death, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei appointed Pakpour to take charge of the IRGC's strategic leadership.
This leadership reshuffle unfolds against the backdrop of a dangerous military escalation. Since Friday, June 13, Israel has been carrying out sustained airstrikes on Iran's nuclear facilities, prompting Tehran to respond with drone and missile attacks of its own. These tit-for-tat strikes have resulted in significant casualties on both sides, deepening fears that the conflict may spiral into a full-scale regional war.
As tensions escalate across the Middle East, Iran’s new intelligence chief faces immense challenges in safeguarding the nation's security and responding to evolving threats.
