Meet the 30,000-Pound Super Bomb Capable of Precision Strikes

As tensions escalate between Israel and Iran, one of the most powerful non-nuclear weapons ever built remains unused—but not unnoticed. Meet the GBU-57A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP)—a 30,000-pound "bunker buster" bomb, capable of drilling deep into the Earth and obliterating underground military complexes.

Though never used in combat, the MOP is considered a last-resort weapon, designed to destroy deeply buried nuclear facilities like Iran’s Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant, located under a mountain near Qom.

What makes this bomb so deadly?

  • It weighs 30,000 pounds (13,600 kg).

  • It can penetrate up to 200 feet (61 meters) underground before detonating.

  • It is approximately 20 feet (6 meters) long.

  • Built by Boeing, it is the largest non-nuclear bomb on Earth.

  • It is capable of precision strikes without creating nuclear fallout.

Unlike its cousin—the “Mother of All Bombs” (MOAB)—which was used in Afghanistan in 2017, the MOP is not designed for surface destruction but rather deep-earth obliteration.

💣 Why hasn’t Israel used it yet?

Although Israel has expressed its intent to "eliminate the threat" of Iran’s nuclear program, it does not possess MOPs or aircraft capable of deploying them. The only known bomber that can carry the MOP is the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, exclusively operated by the United States Air Force.

In recent interviews, Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stated that Iran’s underground facilities like Fordow are the primary targets. However, the U.S. has not authorized the transfer or use of MOPs by Israel—raising questions about how far the alliance will go militarily.

“We have plans to deal with Fordow,” said Israeli officials. “But not everything has to be done from the sky.”

🌍 What is Fordow and why is it critical?

Fordow is Iran’s second major uranium enrichment site after Natanz. It lies about 80 meters beneath a mountain, near Qom, and is protected by advanced Iranian and Russian air defense systems.

In 2023, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported traces of uranium enriched up to 83.7% purity—alarmingly close to weapons-grade. This revelation intensified concerns that Iran may be closer than ever to developing nuclear capabilities, despite Tehran’s repeated claims that their program is for peaceful purposes only.

✈️ Can the U.S. use the MOP if needed?

According to defense analysts, the U.S. military has only 10–20 MOP bombs in deployable condition, and using them would require not just B-2 bombers, but also F-22 Raptors, drones, and other support systems to counter Iran’s air defenses.

"Fordow is likely too deep for a conventional strike. MOP is the only viable option—if the U.S. chooses to intervene directly." — Prof. Paul Rogers, Emeritus, University of Bradford

The B-2 stealth bomber, built by Northrop Grumman, can travel over 11,000 km without refueling and is capable of carrying two MOP bombs simultaneously, totaling 60,000 pounds of payload.

Will MOP be used in Iran?

Whether or not the MOP will be used hinges on U.S. willingness to directly engage, especially under leadership like former President Donald Trump, who has remained ambiguous on military involvement. When asked during the recent G7 summit, Trump responded:

“I don’t want to say anything at this time.”

Military analysts suggest that unless the U.S. leads the operation, Israel alone cannot use or obtain the MOP, making its deployment a matter of geopolitical strategy rather than just military capability.

🧠 Conclusion:

The MOP represents the pinnacle of modern non-nuclear warfare, capable of reaching places no other weapon can. But its sheer power, logistical requirements, and geopolitical implications mean that the decision to use it against Iran would carry global consequences.

Until then, this giant of destruction sits in America’s arsenal—ready, but locked.
