UN Envoy Slams 'Cruel Bombing' of Iran Despite Record Nuclear Transparency

In a fiery address during an emergency session of the UN Security Council, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, strongly condemned recent U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, calling it a "cruel and reprehensible act" against a country showing unparalleled nuclear transparency.

Speaking on Monday (June 23), Nebenzia stated that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has conducted more inspections in Iran than in any other country in the world. Yet, instead of receiving diplomatic support or relief, Iran is facing continuous bombings.

“Iran has demonstrated unprecedented openness, allowing extensive IAEA oversight,” Nebenzia declared, “but in return, it's being bombed—by a state that itself refuses to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).”

He emphasized that Israel has not signed the NPT and is therefore not subjected to full IAEA inspections, in stark contrast to Iran’s high level of cooperation.

💥 Trump Confirms Direct US Strikes on Iranian Nuclear Sites

In the early hours of June 22, former U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that American forces successfully carried out airstrikes on three major Iranian nuclear sites: Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.

Trump claimed the action was intended to push Tehran toward ending its nuclear ambitions, adding that “Iran must now agree to de-escalate.”

These strikes came just days after Israel launched a series of aggressive assaults starting June 13, widely believed to be part of a strategic effort to sabotage Iran’s nuclear infrastructure and apply international pressure.

🕊️ Double Standards and Diplomatic Fallout

Nebenzia highlighted the global double standard, arguing that Iran’s goodwill is being met with bombs, while Israel, which offers minimal transparency, operates with impunity.

He warned:

“This is not just a violation of trust—it’s a dangerous precedent. Rewarding transparency with violence undermines the credibility of international oversight mechanisms like the IAEA.”

🌐 Geopolitical Implications

This latest development threatens to further destabilize the Middle East. Global leaders are increasingly concerned that continued strikes on nuclear sites could provoke an uncontrollable escalation — possibly even drawing in regional or global powers.

As talks of diplomacy fade and military action escalates, the question remains:
Will international law prevail, or are we witnessing a dangerous return to Cold War-style power politics?
